I Am Flags of Freedom
Pupils from schools throughout Tamworth created their own artistic tribute to those who died in the First World War by taking part in an innovative project.
A total of 250 children from six Tamworth schools, as well as volunteers from the Community Cafe worked with artist Maggie Carney on the Flags of Freedom project.
Each group created their own flag to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, using symbols including poppies and the Staffordshire Knot.
The flags – eight in total – were then proudly carried during Tamworth’s annual Remembrance Day parade, which this year attracted around 5,000 people.
Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy, said: “The Flags of Freedom project is a poignant commemoration of those Tamworth men who gave their lives in the First World War and a good way of ensuring the younger generation remembers their sacrifice.
