Tamworth's Biggest 2013 Community Arts Project!

Cult classic Quadrophenia sells out two nights at Tamworth Assembly Rooms.

There were sell-out audiences for both performances of cult classic Quadrophenia, which was brought to the stage at Tamworth Assembly Rooms. The exciting and innovative production was presented by Tamworth Repertory Company – which last year had a huge critical success with Pink Floyd’s The Wall. The ambitious project featured new material by Simon Quinn and Staffordshire’s Poet Laureate, Mal Dewhirst, with choreography by Emma Smith. A total of 80 people from all over Tamworth were involved in the production – on stage, behind the scenes or involved with the music.

The Who’s legendary album, Quadrophenia, provided the soundtrack to the performance and was played live by mod band The Pinch.

Throughout the production, archive film footage of the mod era was projected onto a backdrop on the stage, where a cast of talented actors brought to life the story of Jimmy – exploring issues including counter culture, identity, gender, anti-social behaviour, drug misuse and mental health. It also includes the infamous Brighton beaches battles which took place between Mods and Rockers in the 1970s.

Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy & Education, said: “Quadrophenia is another successful community arts project which brought together a large number of people from all over Tamworth.

“I am delighted that it has been such a huge success and would like to thank those who worked so hard to bring it to life. Everyone who took part was excellent, and The Pinch in particular were exceptional.”
