Generous Tamworth runners and walkers raise £4,400 for Sport Relief
The Sport Relief Mile, which saw more than 200 people pull on their trainers and run or walk through the Castle Grounds, raised £4,433.67 for the charity Sport Relief.
Tamworth’s contribution went towards making up a record-breaking grand total of £72.5 million across the country. The money raised will help disadvantaged people in the UK and some of the poorest communities in the world.
This year’s event, which took place in March, saw runners and walkers competing in either a one, three or six mile run – all of them given the command to ‘go’ by Tamworth heavyweight boxing star Ryan Hatton.
Fancy dress was encouraged and prizes were handed out for the best costumes.
Organised by Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts and Events and Sports Development teams, the Tamworth Mile aimed to raise awareness of the town’s various sporting clubs and organisations, while raising money for poor communities at home and abroad. It was one of more than 500 similar events taking place across the country as part of the Sport Relief campaign.
Cllr Joy Goodall, Cabinet member of Environment & Culture, said: “I would like to say a big thank you to the people of Tamworth for raising more than £4,400 from this year’s Sport Relief Mile. It’s brilliant to have been part of a record-breaking Sport Relief year and to know that we are helping to make a difference to people’s lives.”
Sport Relief will return to Tamworth in 2018, when it is hoped that even more runners and walkers will get on their marks for fundraising.
